first bike

She has ridden a tricycle before, passed on to us by a friend back in Montenegro. This time it was her turn for a real bike, with training wheels. We visited the outdoors shop and had her try one on for size, as well as pick out a bell and helmet (with bees on).

I'm chuffed she ended up with a mauve bike with a few flowers rather than the first one she tried - pink with glitter and shiny tassels.

Then we just left and told her that we'll see if her deda (grandpa) might get it for her. The next day, Husband picked it up, and grandparents presented it to her as her late birthday present. She was thrilled. Understood the way to brake first go. It's a bit bumpy in the backyard here, I'll take her to the local park soon.

These little childhood events can be a little emotional, right? That they grow up can't be ignored when you see them take on the next big thing. Next I guess is riding without the training wheels.

  1. Getting that first bike really is a big deal. A rite of passage. And I love that it's one of the few things that never gets old with time. Everyone I know rides or has ridden a bike and has a great 'bike stack' story to go with it, usually involving a tree or a fence. That's a connection right there :)

  2. So sweet!

My littlest one finally figured out how to pedal his trike this past weekend. He spent nearly every waking moment doing laps around our house. The look on his face - wonderment, excitement, ballooning self-sufficiency. So much goodness with these little ones, huh!

  3. I was very close to getting Michael a bicycle with training wheels, until hubby showed me this beefy tricycle that's actually meant for age 5+. He's barely big enough for it. It just looked like more fun--even has a hitch for a trailer. The funny thing is I actually feel conflicted about it because I know he could handle a two-wheeler. Oh, well, not in any hurry for him to grow up!

  4. whatever they have fun with is the right one i think. :)
