Weekly Geeks: been meaning to read this...

Norwegian Wood, Murakami

I haven't read any Murakami, why?.... which to start with...?
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou

This one has been out forever and I've owned it for 2 years. It's on my 2009 reading list.
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)
I have the whole set and did start reading the first one. I don't know, perhaps it was the time, but I couldn't get into it. Give them away, or try again?

Take a peek what the other geeks have yet to read.

  1. I definitely recommend reading His Dark Materials. I very much enjoyed that series. And I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a must as well. Now for my confession - I haven't read Murakami yet either! I have, however, heard wonderful things.

  2. I am the opposite of Trisha, I disliked His Dark Materials tremendously and was sorry to have wasted my time on all three books. I think it was popular because of the Church bashing but apparently not many people paid attention to the writing which definitely wasn't deserving the bestseller spot.

  3. I 100% agree with Lilly. I did not enjoy His Dark Materials at all and I also felt like I had wasted valuable reading time.

  4. I wouldn't say I liked it because of "Church bashing" but I will admit that it was nice to read a text that dealt with some serious issues within organized religion. Really though, I did enjoy the story of it. Ah, to each their own, eh? :)

  5. lol, defintely to each his own! Love controversy, chuckle.

I enjoyed The Golden Compass film, but not sure if I would have wanted to read it. I'll keep them in mind when I'm in the mood for fantasy.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

  6. I really enjoyed HDM once I got into it, but when I started the first one I did think 'meh, why am I reading this?' Worth persevering with, though, as it got very gripping later on. I haven't seen the film but saw the National Theatre adaptation in London, which was brilliantly done.

  8. I've enjoyed Sputnik Sweetheart (short, a good Murakami to start with), Kafka on the Shore, and The Wind Up Bird Chronicle (my favourite, I think). Couldn't get into Norwegian Wood although that seems to be the most popular.
I really enjoyed HDM, can't wait to read them with the Monkey.
And Maya Angelou, a wonderful poet and I love that book.
Have you read Beloved by the way? (Toni Morrison)

  9. Hey Willow, nice to see you here. Thanks for the Murakami suggestions! I'll look into Kafka and Bird Chronicle.

Yes, I've read all of Tony Morrison's work. Mixed feelings about Beloved.

  10. I have read the first two books in the His Dark Materials series, but for some reason I haven't been inspired to pick up the third book!
